12/6/2016 1 Comment Poppy's birthday surprise! It was a lovely, sunny morning in Primrose Glade, and it was also Poppy Dappledawn's birthday. Excited, she woke early and got dressed for school. Tess Walnut, who she shared a room with, was still asleep. Poppy and Tessa both lodge with the McBurrow's mole family, so that they can attend Primrose Glade School. Their family homes are too far away to make the daily journey, and they only see their families in school holidays. Although Poppy misses her family dreadfully, she loves her school and Digger and Heidi are incredibly kind. "Good morning Poppy dear, Happy Birthday!" Heidi greeted her. Digger gave her a birthday kiss "Are you looking forward to your birthday tea?" "Oh yes" replied Poppy "very much, thank you for organising it for me" "What would you like for breakfast?" asked Heidi. "Nothing, thank you, I want to phone my parents on the way to school" ...and with that, she grabbed her coat and bag and was gone. The phone call home was emotional. Poppy's mum, dad, sister Tilly and brother Raddish all gathered around the telephone to sing "Happy Birthday". Poppy hung up with tears in her eyes, and then mounted her bicycle to hurry off to school. ...she arrived just in time, Mr Buckley was already ringing the bell! Meanwhile, back at the McBurrow's Heidi began preparations for the afternoon's tea party. First she sent Digger outside to tidy the garden. This suited Digger fine Then she cleaned the kitchen thoroughly ...and did the vacuuming Then it was time to bake the all-important cake Soon Poppy and Tess arrived home, and dashed upstairs to put on their party dresses. "You look so pretty Poppy" complimented Tess "Oh thanks, you too" smiled Poppy. Everyone went outside to greet Abbie Keats, Poppy's best friend, who arrived with a huge gift ."Wow, thank you!" exclaimed Poppy After opening her cards and gifts, Poppy and her friends sat down to a wonderful tea. "Oh, I just realised Muddy isn't here?" exclaimed Poppy "No," laughed Molly "he said he didn't want to go to a girl's party!" After lots of eating, giggling and gossiping when Poppy was just thinking it was nearly time for Abbie to go home, Heidi appeared with a huge cake. ..."Gosh, I didn't expect all this, thank you all so much, it's been a lovely..." but then Poppy was distracted by the bus stopping outside the house. That never happened, the bus stop was a bit further down the lane. Poppy couldn't believe it when she recognised familiar faces leaning out of the bus windows "Mummy, Daddy!!" Poppy yelled and ran out to greet her family Theodora smothered her daughter with kisses. "But I don't understand, have you really come all this way for my birthday?" "No Poppy dear," grinned her father "we are moving to Primrose Glade, Tilly needs to start school soon, and Raddish won't be far behind. Your mother and I are going to start running outward bound holidays in Primrose Woods" "I can't believe it, you never told me you were planning all this" laughed Poppy. "No," he replied, "We wanted it to be a surprise!" The Dappledawn family all together in Primrose Glade at last.
